Reach Out and Read Book-Related Policies

Reach Out and Read is, first and foremost, about promoting shared reading of high-quality books by caregivers and young children.  Some topics, while of social or personal value, are not appropriate for all populations and may distract from the central intent of the program.  Accordingly, Reach Out and Read Programs do not distribute books that have commercial/media tie-ins, contain stereotypes, or touch on subjects such as death, medical issues, religion, holidays, and divorce.

Reach Out and Read's National Office does not provide blurbs, written endorsements or reviews of books.

Book Selection for Reach Out and Read Vendor Catalogues

Books given by medical providers as part of the Reach Out and Read program are made available through catalogues published for Reach Out and Read by selected vendors who choose the books for their catalogues according to the guidelines above, and considering factors such as price and availability. Authors wishing to submit a book for consideration should contact those vendors directly.
