One of Reach Out and Read's greatest strengths is that it works within the existing healthcare infrastructure, reducing overhead and making the organization more efficient and cost-effective.
Below is a brief description of each of the components of the Reach Out and Read nationwide organization.
The Reach Out and Read National Center oversees the implementation and execution of the Reach Out and Read model of early literacy promotion nationwide. In addition to developing the official training curriculum and coordinating all research and quality improvement initiatives, the National Center also builds national partnerships with corporations, foundations, and other literacy and children's organizations. The National Center provides medical leadership for all Reach Out and Read Programs and Coalitions, creates standardized literacy and marketing materials, and facilitates the sharing of best practices. The National Center also works directly with publishers to secure significant discounts on children's books, develops national fundraising strategies, and leads all federal advocacy campaigns.

Reach Out and Read Coalitions are statewide and regional offices affiliated with the Reach Out and Read National Center that work directly with Reach Out and Read Programs to ensure the effective implementation and quality of the Reach Out and Read model. Coalitions provide technical assistance to Programs and oversee program expansion, community outreach, fundraising, public relations, and advocacy in their geographic area. Coalitions are led by a Coalition Leader and Medical Director. Approximately 85% of Reach Out and Read Programs nationwide are located within a Coalition.

A Reach Out and Read Program/Site is a healthcare facility that provides pediatric primary care (hospital, health center, clinic, pediatric practice, or family practice) and has fully implemented the Reach Out and Read model. All doctors, nurses, and medical staff at Reach Out and Read Programs are trained in the ROR model and volunteer the time they spend promoting early literacy and school readiness. Programs report regularly on their progress to the National Center and to their regional Coalition, if applicable. Programs also work closely with the National Center and respective Coalition on raising awareness about Reach Out and Read, advocacy, and fundraising. Typically a volunteer Site Coordinator and Medical Director oversee the Program's Reach Out and Read activities. Today, there are more than 4,500 active Reach Out and Read Programs nationwide.
Note: An ROR Program that is administered by another Reach Out and Read Program is sometimes referred to as a Reach Out and Read Satellite.
