summary

The Ages & Stages Questionnaires® (ASQ®) is an instrument that can be used for developmental and social-emotional screening in young children. The ASQ can identify both developmental progress and developmental delays to guide and support next steps in learning, intervention, and/or monitoring.

    • Gross Motor
    • Fine Motor
    • Communication
    • Problem Solving
    • Personal-Social

Sample Items: ASQ items are answered by the parent about their child. Some items require the parent to guide their child in certain activities and report on the child’s performance. For example, “Does your baby pick up a crumb or Cheerio with the tips of his thumb and a finger?” The parent may answer: yes, sometimes, or not yet.

 

Administration Format: Parent-report survey (print or digital)

Administration: 10-15 minutes | Scoring: 2-3 minutes | Total Time: 12-18 minutes

 

Reliability (Squires 2009, Rothstein 2017):

    • Test-Retest: 92% agreement between parent ASQ scores at 0 and 2 weeks (ICC=0.75-0.82)
    • Interrater/Intrarater: 93% agreement between parents and examiners (ICC=0.43-0.69)
    • Internal Consistency: Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.51-0.87 for 2-60 months intervals across domains.

 

Validity (Squires 2009, Rothstein 2017):

    • Predictive/Sensitivity:
      • 27-36 months: ASQ-3 correctly identified 85.9% of children at risk for delay
      • 42-60 months: ASQ-3 correctly identified 82.5% of children at risk for delay
    • Discriminant/Specificity:
      • 27-36 months: ASQ-3 correctly identified 85.7% of children NOT at risk for delay
      • 42-60 months: ASQ-3 correctly identified 92.1% of children NOT at risk for delay
