Brian Gallagher, M.P.A.
As Chief Executive Officer, Brian
Gallagher leads the Reach Out and Read network, including more
than 5,800 program sites in all 50 states and nearly 30 regional,
state, and local affiliates. Gallagher, who has been with Reach Out
and Read since 2007, previously served as the organization's
Director of National Programs, providing strategic leadership to
all aspects of organization's national programmatic activity,
including program metrics, medical provider training and
professional development, quality assurance and improvement, and
special initiatives. He spearheaded national efforts to increase
the number of children served and the number of healthcare
providers who participate in Reach Out and Read, resulting in a
significant increase in organizational capacity from 3,700 programs
to more than 5,400. In collaboration with partners nationwide,
Gallagher led a strategy to build a strong foundation for numerous
new state and regional affiliates to increase capacity to serve
even more children living in low-income communities. Gallagher
previously worked as a Policy and Program Manager for the Boston
Private Industry Council, a workforce development organization with
a special focus on designing and implementing school-to-career
programs. He holds an M.P.A. from Suffolk University and a B.A.
from Hamilton College.
Perri Klass, M.D., F.A.A.P.
National Medical Director
Perri Klass led the National Center from 1993 to 2006, during
which time Reach Out and Read grew from a single program into a
national network of more than 3,000 program sites. She is a
professor of journalism and pediatrics at New York University,
where she works in the pediatric clinic at Bellevue Hospital, and
where she is currently the Director of the Arthur L. Carter
Journalism Institute. Klass received her M.D. from Harvard
University and completed her training in pediatrics at Boston
Children's Hospital, and in pediatric infectious diseases at Boston
City Hospital. She received the 2007 American Academy of Pediatrics
Education Award for her work with Reach Out and Read, and the 2011
Alvarez Award from the American Medical Writers Association. She
writes frequently about children's issues, including the weekly
"The Checkup" column for the New York Times.
Laurel Ford, M.B.A., C.P.A.
Chief Financial Officer
Laurel Ford is responsible for Reach Out and Read's financial
management. Since 2012, Ford has directed the current and
long-term financial plans and accounting practices of Reach Out and
Read. She manages the organization's financial reporting,
budgeting, contracting, auditing, human resources, office
administration, and management reporting. Ford has more than
25 years of financial management experience in for-profit and
not-for-profit organizations. Prior to joining Reach Out and
Read, Ford held executive level finance positions at Hasbro and
U.S. Foodservice along with a variety of consulting and
controllership positions. She is a certified public
accountant, holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and an MBA in
Finance from Bentley University.
Diane Malcolmson, M.B.A., M.A. International
National Development Director
As National Development Director of Reach Out and Read, Diane
Malcolmson focuses on leading the organization's advancement
efforts and developing national fundraising partnerships across its
network of 5,800 program sites. Malcolmson brings more than 20
years of experience to the position, and served most recently as
the Chief Development Officer at nonprofit Boston Medflight, a
regional leader in critical care transport. Prior to this, she
served as Vice President of Development and Marketing at the
Dimock Center, and as Senior Director of National Development at
Year Up. Earlier in her career, Malcolmson held development
leadership roles at organizations including Harvard University,
Columbia University, Winchester Hospital, and Tufts University. She
also served as Senior Vice President and Director
of Internal Marketing, Media and Communications at Fleet
Financial Group. Malcolmson earned her Bachelor's degree in
international relations from Regis College and two Master's
degrees, one in business administration and the other in
international affairs, from Columbia University.
Nikki Shearman, Ph.D.
Director of Communications and Research
Nikki Shearman guides the strategy for communications both
across the Reach Out and Read network and to all stakeholders of
the organization, as well as the strategy for research and
evaluation that demonstrates Reach Out and Read's impact. Shearman
brings a combined experience of research and communications to this
position, starting with 10 years' experience in medical research in
laboratories in the UK, Japan and Germany, and publication of her
work in international journals, including Cell and P.N.A.S.
Shearman then pursued a passion for communications both within the
scientific arena and in non-profit organizations in the UK and the
US. Shearman earned her Ph.D. in cancer research from the
University of Southampton, UK.
