Brian Gallagher UpdatedBrian Gallagher, M.P.A.
Chief Executive Officer


As Chief Executive Officer, Brian Gallagher leads the Reach Out and Read network, including more than 6,000 program sites in all 50 states and nearly 30 regional, state, and local affiliates. Gallagher, who has been with Reach Out and Read since 2007, previously served as the organization's Director of National Programs, providing strategic leadership to all aspects of organization's national programmatic activity, including program metrics, medical provider training and professional development, quality assurance and improvement, and special initiatives. He spearheaded national efforts to increase the number of children served and the number of healthcare providers who participate in Reach Out and Read, resulting in a significant increase in organizational capacity from 3,700 programs to more than 5,400. In collaboration with partners nationwide, Gallagher led a strategy to build a strong foundation for numerous new state and regional affiliates to increase capacity to serve even more children living in low-income communities. Gallagher previously worked as a Policy and Program Manager for the Boston Private Industry Council, a workforce development organization with a special focus on designing and implementing school-to-career programs. He holds an M.P.A. from Suffolk University and a B.A. from Hamilton College.

National Medical Director

Perri Klass led the National Center from 1993 to 2006, during which time Reach Out and Read grew from a single program into a national network of more than 3,000 program sites. She is a professor of journalism and pediatrics at New York University, where she works in the pediatric clinic at Bellevue Hospital, and where she is currently the Director of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. Klass received her M.D. from Harvard University and completed her training in pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital, and in pediatric infectious diseases at Boston City Hospital. She received the 2007 American Academy of Pediatrics Education Award for her work with Reach Out and Read, and the 2011 Alvarez Award from the American Medical Writers Association. She writes frequently about children's issues, including the weekly "The Checkup" column for the New York Times.


Diane Malcolmson UpdatedDiane Malcolmson, M.B.A., M.A. International Affairs
Chief Development Officer

As Chief Development Officer of Reach Out and Read, Diane Malcolmson focuses on leading the organization's advancement efforts and developing national fundraising partnerships across its network of 6,800 program sites. Malcolmson brings more than 20 years of experience to the position, and served most recently as the Chief Development Officer at nonprofit Boston Medflight, a regional leader in critical care transport. Prior to this, she served as Vice President of Development and Marketing at the Dimock Center, and as Senior Director of National Development at Year Up. Earlier in her career, Malcolmson held development leadership roles at organizations including Harvard University, Columbia University, Winchester Hospital, and Tufts University. She also served as Senior Vice President and Director of Internal Marketing, Media and Communications at Fleet Financial Group. Malcolmson earned her Bachelor's degree in international relations from Regis College and two Master's degrees, one in business administration and the other in international affairs, from Columbia University. 


nikkiNikki Shearman, Ph.D.
Chief of Network Strategy and Evaluation

Nikki Shearman is responsible for guiding a planning process to formulate and implement the Network Unity Strategy. This is designed to unify our organizational strengths and grow and strengthen the Reach Out and Read intervention. She also coordinates the strategy for research and evaluation that demonstrates Reach Out and Read's impact. Shearman brings a combined experience of research, operational strategy and communications to this position, starting with 10 years' experience in medical research in laboratories in the UK, Japan and Germany, and publication of her work in international journals. Subsequently, Shearman has worked within the management of a variety of non-profit organizations in the UK and the US. Shearman earned her Ph.D. in cancer research from the University of Southampton, UK.
