In 1989, two
forward-thinking doctors, Robert Needlman and Barry Zuckerman,
together with early childhood educators Jean Nigro, Kathleen
MacLean, and Kathleen Fitzgerald-Rice, introduced the first Reach
Out and Read program at Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical
Center). The group was inspired by the mothers and children they
witnessed reading in the waiting room and how the energy around
books brought such joy to these families. They wanted all families
to experience the joy of connecting through reading aloud.
Reach Out and
Read's primary goal is to engage parents to be their child's first
and most important teacher. Learning starts with reading in the
home, from birth.
Over the last 30
years, Reach Out and Read has grown from 1 clinic, 2 pediatricians,
and 500 children and families to 32,700 pediatric providers at
6,000 healthcare locations nationwide. Annually, the organizations
impacts 4.7 million children through the distribution of more than
7 million new, developmentally and culturally appropriate
To honor our past and look to the future, Reach Out and
Read will be celebrating this milestone in the city where it all
