(WFMY News 2)

A $40,000 grant has been awarded to North and South Carolina to promote early childhood literacy and healthy relationships.

The grant was made possible by a record-setting donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott to the nonprofit organization, Reach Out and Read.

The funds will be used to support 10 projects, for a total of $400,000, around the county, and $40,000 of that goes towards helping families in the Carolinas and Midatlantic. The projects will impact 4.4 million families that have young children. The goal is to strengthen families through shared reading.
