The power of partnership was fully displayed when Bank of America hosted a volunteer book drive supporting families in need across our community in September. Through this collaborative effort, three Reach Out and Read Northwest partner clinics—Neighborcare Health at Columbia City, Sea Mar Seattle, and Community Healthcare Lakewood—received books for children and families.
Reach Out and Read Northwest was also pleased to participate in Bank of America’s employee picnic in September, where staff donated books. Reach Out and Read staff members Zakiya Jackson and Ash Powers connected with employees and shared details about how Reach Out and Read supports clinicians to use children’s books during well-child checkups and send books home with families to continue reading together.
Recognizing that clinics serve diverse populations with unique needs, Bank of America hosted a virtual book drive component that collected monetary donations. This will allow us to partner with the clinics to select and purchase books that are culturally relevant for the families they serve.
The availability of books in clinical settings is transformative for both patients and providers. As Dr. Molly Capron points out, “Now instead of a child asking whether they are getting a shot today, they ask, ‘Am I getting a book today?'” This shift in children’s expectations demonstrates how introducing books early can foster positive feelings about reading and about visiting the doctor. Leading with books and shared reading at well-child checkups helps clinicians build trust with families, encourage family bonding, and set the stage for school and life success.
This partnership demonstrates how the corporate and nonprofit sectors can work together to promote early literacy initiatives, creating lasting benefits for children and families across our region. The generosity and community spirit shown by the Bank of America team exemplifies thoughtful community engagement and partnership!
