Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof just named Reach Out and Read an honoree of the 2024 Holiday Impact Prize in The New York Times! This award celebrates the transformational change Reach Out and Read brings to children and families.
Only about 1 in 3 children under age 2 are read to every day — and that drops to only 1 in 4 kids in households with low incomes.
“By ‘prescribing’ books during pediatric visits — and giving the books away for free — Reach Out and Read ushers children onto the magic carpet of reading at an early age for an incredibly inexpensive cost.” — Nicholas Kristof
Thanks to the generosity of the Overdeck Family Foundation, the Einhorn Collaborative, the Hearst Foundations, and an anonymous donor, the first $400,000 raised through the Holiday Impact Prize will be matched dollar for dollar.
Please help Reach Out and Read get books and guidance about the lifelong impact of shared reading to families who need it. Your gift changes lives!
Who We Are
Reach Out and Read uses children’s books and shared reading to support parents and caregivers in strengthening healthy relationships and building early literacy skills with their infants and young children. During pediatric well-child visits, our 39,000 clinicians provide new books and discuss with families the lifelong benefits that result from parents reading aloud with their children every day.
Last year, we served 4.6 million children and shared 7.7 million books across 9.3 million face-to-face interactions with families.

“What a bargain to be able to reach a child and have this impact.” Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nick Kristof and Reach Out and Read CEO Marty Martinez discuss the transformational value of Reach Out and Read.
