Mercy Care’s smallest patients (6 mo-5 yrs) are being “prescribed” new, age-appropriate books through Reach Out and Read Georgia. Reading together has major health benefits for the whole family.

When pediatricians promote literacy readiness according to the Reach Out and Read Georgia model, research shows a significant effect on parental behavior and attitudes toward reading aloud, as well as improvements in the language scores of young children who participate.

Mercy Care is now accepting gently used English & Spanish books to grow their library.

About Mercy Care

The Sisters of Mercy have a long history of healing ministry in the South. President Abraham Lincoln recognized them for their compassion and dedication to all soldiers in our Civil War. In 1880 they opened the first hospital in metro Atlanta, Atlanta Hospital, later named Saint Joseph’s. In 1985 Mercy Care Services was incorporated as a nonprofit and in 2001 built their current headquarters and clinic on Decatur Street in downtown Atlanta.
