A Reach Out and Read Georgia Community Event in Fulton County

The event quickly turned into a family gathering with a community of volunteers, parents, grandparents and pediatricians reading to children in the waiting room.

Sharon and Jamie Carli with nine-month Brielle were thrilled to join one of Fulton county Reach Out and Read Georgia community events last July in support of the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club an initiative to prevent summer learning loss and improve 3rd grade reading scores across the state.

The event quickly turned into a family gathering with Primrose Schools volunteers, community members, parents, grandparents, and pediatricians reading to children in the waiting room.

The event quickly turned into a family gathering with Primrose Schools volunteers, community members, parents, grandparents, and pediatricians reading to children in the waiting room and leading parents to a pop-up nutrition cart filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables. The beautiful selection of oranges, pomegranates, squash, eggplant, and tomatoes complimented the children’s book Grandma’s Garden.  The message about the importance of healthy habits and how food fuels the body, and words and activities like reading are language nutrition for a child’s young developing brain resonated with families.

Before long the Carli family was called for their appointment and during the exam Brielle was presented with another new book from her pediatrician who prescribed reading as a daily activity with mom and dad.  As this special family were leaving the mom thanked us for “making her family feel so loved.”
