Sia Y. Magadan is a proud first-generation American, a lifelong champion of literacy and equity, and the newly appointed Executive Director of Reach Out and Read Northern California. With deep roots in community development and strategic fundraising, Sia brings not just a wealth of experience — but also a bold vision for transforming how we think about literacy, health, and belonging across the region.
Sia’s journey — from navigating college as the oldest child of Sierra Leonean immigrants to mobilizing meaningful resources and partnerships — has been grounded in one belief: that books build more than brains — they build bridges. Her work has spanned classrooms, boardrooms, and forgotten communities, always with a focus on empowering those historically left behind by systems.
As the former Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships at United Way California Capital Region and a key leader at the Oakland Literacy Coalition, Sia has helped move resources into communities that needed them most. Now, at the helm of Reach Out and Read NorCal, she is laser-focused on expanding the organization’s impact beyond its Bay Area roots, reaching into vibrant and often overlooked regions like Del Paso Heights, Arden-Arcade, Florin, and the Central Valley.
Under her leadership, Reach Out and Read Northern California will center books, bonds, and bright futures, bringing the power of pediatric literacy into exam rooms, family homes, and community spaces. Sia sees early literacy not just as a milestone, but as a proactive public health intervention and a justice strategy — a way to shift outcomes before disparities take root.
What makes Sia’s leadership unique is her ability to move between strategy and soul. She is a seasoned development leader, a mentor to emerging fundraisers, and an unapologetic advocate for children and families. Her lens is shaped by lived experience and professional rigor, and she brings that full-hearted perspective to every space she enters.
